EBRD inquired about the progress of the €50 million project

With the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Moldova has made remarkable progress in implementing a project on solid and hazardous waste management, Logos Press reports.

EBRD inquired about the progress of the €50 million project

At a meeting with the new Head of the EBRD Office in Moldova, Giuseppe Grimaldi, the Minister of Environment, Gheorghe Hajder, presented the current progress of the project.

The best results have been achieved in regions 5 – Ungheni, Nisporeni and Calarasi, and 8 – Briceni, Edinet, Donduseni and Ocnita. Tenders for the design and construction of the necessary infrastructure have already been announced here. In the rest of the regions, feasibility studies and the formation of regional operators for efficient waste management are still in progress.

Hajder thanked the EBRD for its support in building infrastructure for the safe collection and treatment of hazardous waste: “This will allow for the first time the collection and controlled treatment of such waste, reducing the risks of pollution and health impacts.

The Solid Waste in the Republic of Moldova project was launched in 2023 and is being implemented until 2028 with support from the EBRD and the European Investment Bank (EIB). It covers regionalization of services in 8 waste management zones, establishment of infrastructure for waste collection, transportation, sorting, composting and safe disposal of waste, including reclamation of old landfills. The EBRD provided a loan of 25 million euros for the implementation of the project. Moldova received a further EUR 25 million from the EIB.
