This is stipulated by amendments to the law on granting exemption from import duties to Moldovan citizens returning to reside in the Republic of Moldova. This document was adopted by the Parliament in the second reading.
The amendments mainly concern the conditions of exemption from import duties on cars.
Thus, the eligibility criteria for motor vehicles will be extended. The age limit will increase from 9 to 10 years, the value of the car from 400,000 to 550,000 lei, and the engine volume from 2,500 to 3,000 cc.
In addition, citizens returning to Moldova for permanent residence will be able to import personal belongings without paying import duties within the limits indicated in the application submitted to the Customs Service.
All those interested must sign a declaration in which they undertake to stay in the country for 3 years as a resident.
According to the author of the document (from the PAS party), the provisions of the draft law are aimed at facilitating the return to the country of its own citizens, which will have a positive, comprehensive impact, both socially and economically.
The new document will enter into force this week – January 1, 2026.
