Democrația Acasă calls for a state of emergency in the energy sector

"Tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, police officers and firefighters may be left without fuel for their vehicles," said Democrația Acasă faction MP Sergiu Stefanco, a member of the Agriculture and Food Industry Commission. He insists on an urgent state of emergency in the energy sector.

He said the fuel shortage was caused by the spike in global prices and instability of supply, and it was threatening the normal functioning of services and agriculture.

“At some gas stations at the position “diesel” is “0” because it is not available. And I understand why it’s not there. This morning the price of a barrel has already been announced at $119-120. For comparison, last week, when the barrel cost about $80, the wholesale price at the refineries was 28 lei per liter of diesel. Today I am afraid to name exact figures – I discussed the situation with the companies supplying diesel and gasoline, trying to understand why there was a shortage, and they explained the following: “They do not sell fuel to us at the current price,” the MP said.

He emphasized that the state has no fuel reserves and called on the government to urgently declare a state of emergency in the energy sector.

“We run the risk that tomorrow-next day there will be nothing to fuel the cars of police and firefighters. I don’t know if the National Army has reserves – I don’t want to jump to premature conclusions – but I’m going to make inquiries and see if diesel and petrol are available, although I highly doubt it. The lesson that should have been learned in 2022 was not learned. And so today we find ourselves in a complete crisis. Therefore, the Democrația Acasă faction publicly calls on the government to hold an urgent meeting and declare a state of emergency in the energy sector, not just a state of high alert,” Stefanco said.

The MPs also propose to abolish excise duties and VAT on fuel imports in order to stabilize the market and maintain normal conditions for agricultural work.

Sergiu Stefanco said that the commission is convening an emergency meeting on Wednesday with the participation of the National Energy Regulatory Agency, the Finance Ministry and the Customs Service to discuss the situation.

We shall remind you that last week, the government imposed a 60-day high alert regime in the energy sector. As the National Crisis Management Center later specified, the export and re-export of gasoline and diesel fuel from the Giurgiulesti port may be restricted if the stocks fall below 8,000 tons of gasoline and 25,000 tons of diesel fuel.
