The National Food Safety Authority (ANSA) has announced the start of the development of a Regulation establishing restrictions on the use of certain antimicrobials in veterinary medicine.

Among the main objectives of the initiative is to prevent the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance. The regulation will establish clear and uniform rules for the use of antimicrobials in animals, including cases of complete prohibition or strict conditions of use.

The project is intended to harmonize national legislation with the EU norms on the responsible use of antimicrobials in veterinary medicine.

Reaction to metronidazole

It should be noted that the agency initiated the development of the draft Regulation after a case that occurred in early January, when residues of the banned antimicrobial substance metronidazole were detected in products of animal origin.

The antibiotic was found in eggs, and according to the investigation, the source of the antibiotic was animal feed imported from Ukraine.

Due to the risks it poses, its use has been prohibited for animals from which food products intended for human consumption are derived since 1997 in the European Union and since 2011 in the Republic of Moldova.
