Crime rates are down

The crime rate continues to decrease. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, 23.1 thousand crimes were registered on the territory of Moldova in 2025, which is 6% less compared to 2024 and 14.9% less compared to 2021.

The overwhelming majority of criminals are men. Their share in the total number amounted to 91.9%, compared to 8.1% of women.

According to the Agency for Digitalization in Justice and Judicial Administration, the number of first instance convictions in 2025 was 11.8 thousand, meaning that 32 people were convicted every day. Compared to 2024, the number of first instance convicts increased by 8.4%. The main types of punishments imposed on convicted persons in the first instance court were imprisonment, fine and suspended sentence.

In 2025, according to the National Penitentiary Administration, there were 6.3 thousand people in penitentiary institutions, including 1.4 thousand people (22.4%) in pre-trial detention and with inconclusive sentences, and 4.9 thousand people (77.6%) with final sentences. Of the total number of prisoners, 5.3% were women and 94.7% men.
