On Saturday, Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolhogan visited the Albica border crossing point after a visit to Moldova. There, the latest details regarding the entry into force of the decree on the promulgation of the law on the ratification of the Agreement between the Romanian and Moldovan governments on coordinated control on the Romanian territory at the Galati (Romania)-Giurgiulesti (Moldova) border crossing point for road transport entering Romania were announced.
The coordinated control is carried out by both border police and customs authorities of the two countries. The agreement is similar to the one already in place at Albice – Leuseni and aims to reduce waiting times and facilitate the movement of people and goods, as well as to strengthen cooperation between Romania and RM.
“This procedure implies a separate control in each state. At the exit – by Moldovan authorities and then, at a short distance, by Romanian authorities when entering this country. As this is an external border of the EU, border controls cannot be carried out according to the principle of a single stop. The difference from the previous way of control is that at the exit from Moldova, at the Giurgiulesti border crossing point, the crossing will be uncontrolled, while the stop for inspection will be made at the entry into Romania, at the Galați-rutier border crossing point, depending on the type of vehicle/priority of control,” explained the representatives of the Romanian Border Police.
There are eight control lanes for international traffic of cars, vans and buses, and another four lanes for freight traffic.
Since the beginning of the year, more than 6 million people have passed through checkpoints on the border between Moldova and Romania in both directions. Of them 800 thousand – through the checkpoint Galati. Over the same period of time, more than two million vehicles crossed the Moldovan-Romanian border, of which almost 300,000 were trucks.
