According to historical sources, Chisinau is first mentioned in July 17, 1436 in a princely charter issued by Ilias and Stefan, sons of Alexander the Good, rulers of Moldova. This document confirms an earlier donation made by the Grand Logofat Vlaicu to the voivode monastery of Vărzăresti, and the toponym Chisinau (“Chișineu”) appears for the first time in the description of the estate boundaries.
This is a key moment in the written history of the city – the first documentary evidence of a Moldovan settlement located at the crossroads of water and trade routes.
The name Chisinau has survived to this day, and reflects the birth of the city’s identity, which has been shaped over the centuries through people, institutions, buildings and stories.
To commemorate this day, the Chisinau Municipality, together with the Municipal Library “BP Hasdeu”, the Museum of the History of the City and other partners have prepared a large program of cultural events.
