Currently, the second section of the bridge is being leveled by covering it with a bonded asphalt concrete layer. In the near future, the wear layer of the road surface will be applied, said the capital’s Mayor Ion Ceban.
The repair of the bridge started in 2023 after an expert examination, which showed the critical deterioration of the structure. The structural elements were in a neglected state, which could affect their bearing capacity and traffic safety on the bridge.
Despite the obvious urgency of the need for intervention, it was only at the fifth attempt to find a contractor and conclude a contract. The winner of the tender was a consortium formed by “Gran But Service” from Ukraine (Vulcanesti branch in RM), “Genesis International” and an electrical company.
The completion of the repairs was also postponed several times. As explained by the contractors, the repairs are related to complex works, in particular concreting, which is suspended for the winter period.
Initially, the project was estimated at 78 million lei, later the cost rose to 108 million lei. In the process of carrying out the works, more and more technical difficulties and volumes of works were revealed, which could not be ignored. This required additional financing. Therefore, after adjusting the contract and taking into account inflation in 2025, the cost of the reconstruction will amount to 128 million lei.
The bridge on Mihai Vitaizul Street was put into operation in 1974. In 2012, it underwent a current repair, which cost 2.5 million lei. Even then, it was clear that the bridge needed a more serious reconstruction.
