The construction works started in April 2025 and should be completed in the fall of 2026. Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development of Moldova Vladimir Bolia and the State Secretary of the Romanian Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Irinel Scriosteanu made another monitoring visit to the construction site on August 11, 2025 to coordinate the works.
The facility is located north of the city of Ungheni, near the Moldovan village of Zagarancea and the Romanian village of Golaesti. It is financed by grants from European funds, through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF, “Connecting Europe”, a program of the European Union in the field of transport, energy and digital services). The budget is 151.68 million Romanian lei (excluding VAT). This is the equivalent of about 30 million euros.
On the Romanian territory, the bridge complex becomes a continuation of the A8 highway Târgu-Mureş – Iasi – Ungheni, called Autostrada Unirii, which is scheduled for completion in 2029-2030. On the Moldovan side, the bridge will be part of the national highway R1 Ungheni-Chisinau.
In September 2024, the Romanian National Company for Road Infrastructure Management (CNAIR) and the contractor selected after a tender, the Romanian company Ness Proiect Europe, signed the relevant contract. The contractor is granted about 151 million Romanian lei. For its part, Ness Proiect Europe undertook to complete the works within 24 months, of which 6 months are allocated for design and 18 months for construction.
