According to Igor Bilyk, the first deputy director of the port, the length of the route to the Romanian city of Galati is 320 kilometers, of which 182 kilometers pass through the territory of Ukraine, 129 kilometers – Moldova and 9 kilometers – Romania. The key factor in the implementation of the project was the large-scale reconstruction of the railroad section “Bender – Bessarabca – Etulia – Giurgiulesti” in Moldova. The works, which started in 2022, are to be completed in 2025 and envisage the modernization of 230 km of track.

The total cost of the project is 108 million euros, which are provided by the European Investment Bank and the EBRD. A company from Kazakhstan, Temirzhol Zhendeu, has been selected as the contractor.

According to Igor Bilyk, the renewed infrastructure will increase the speed of trains up to 90 km/h, remove restrictions on freight capacity, reduce delivery time and ensure stable transit between the railway systems of Ukraine, Moldova and the EU. This route should become an important link in the region’s logistics and will facilitate international trade.
