The statement was published on the official page of the defense ministry in the Chinese social network WeChat, writes RIA Novosti. A representative of the ministry emphasized that giving algorithms the right to make decisions involving human life calls into question the existing moral principles of warfare and could lead to serious consequences.
The Chinese side’s comment came after a publication in The Wall Street Journal, which reported that the U.S. and Israel are using artificial intelligence technologies to analyze intelligence data, identify targets and plan military operations during the conflict with Iran.
According to Jiang Bin, using the latest technology to gain absolute military advantage or interfere in the internal affairs of other states could undermine international security. He noted that Beijing opposes such an approach.
The Chinese side also expressed its readiness to participate in the development of international mechanisms for regulating artificial intelligence. In particular, it is a question of creating a system of multilateral control with the key role of the United Nations, which would minimize possible risks and ensure responsible use of such technologies.
The movie “Terminator”, released in 1984, tells about the confrontation between people and machines controlled by artificial intelligence, which gets out of control and starts a war against humanity. This is the scenario Chinese military experts cite as a warning about the possible consequences of uncontrolled AI development.
