The document aims to simplify procedures for Moldovan citizens living and working in Ireland, as well as for Irish citizens in the Republic of Moldova. If the agreement is adopted, the procedure for exchanging driver’s licenses will become faster and simplified, without the need for a full retake of the examinations.

The government’s decision comes on the eve of a planned visit of Moldovan President Maia Sandu to Dublin. Within the visit, the head of state will hold a meeting with representatives of the Moldovan diaspora.

The event will take place in the evening of April 8. The participants in the meeting are expected to discuss the situation in the country, Moldova’s European course, as well as the role of the diaspora in supporting reforms and state processes.

Moldovan citizens residing in Ireland are invited to pre-register for the meeting through an online form, indicating their contact details, city of residence, field of activity, as well as the topics and issues to be discussed.

There is no information about possible official meetings between Maia Sandu and the Irish authorities. However, the presidential administration announced that the head of state will make working visits to Finland and Latvia from March 31 to April 1. In Helsinki, a meeting with the president of Finland is scheduled, while in Riga – negotiations with the president, prime minister and the leadership of the Latvian parliament. In addition, Maja Sandu will deliver a speech at a plenary session of the Latvian Saeima.

Irish Minister for European Affairs and Defense Thomas Byrne recently paid a visit to Moldova. At a meeting with him, the head of state emphasized the importance of opening an Irish embassy in Moldova. We shall remind you that the embassy was to be operational by the end of last year.

It is worth mentioning that Ireland will hold the presidency of the Council of the European Union from July 1, 2026.
