Azerbaijan will tighten control over AI

Azerbaijan is preparing large-scale changes in the sphere of cyber security: the state will strengthen control over data processing in artificial intelligence systems and limit the use of cloud solutions in the public sector, Logos Press reports.

Tough rules for artificial intelligence

It was announced at the event “Legislation in the field of cyber security in Azerbaijan” that the country is developing a special document that will establish requirements for AI security, Report.az writes.

Depending on what data are used and how they are processed in AI systems, it will be decided whether the transfer of this data to the cloud environment is permissible. Based on the classification of information, it will be possible to determine which data is allowed to be transferred, and for which it is necessary to train own models within state structures.

The authorities are striving to both protect government data and create a user-friendly, practical environment for public bodies.

According to experts, cloud solutions are the main challenge to cybersecurity today. Azerbaijan adheres to a cautious approach: in most cases, state organizations are prohibited from using cloud services. Exceptions are possible only in case of special agreements, Report.az specifies.

Priority is given to on-premise infrastructure – data storage within the country and ensuring internal control over information systems.

The course to digital sovereignty

It was also about “splinternet” – the fragmentation of the global network. Many governments and alliances, such as the European Union, are looking to strengthen digital sovereignty. This involves storing data within their territories, controlling DNS queries and Internet traffic exchange points, so that even in the event of sanctions, restrictions or other crises, they can ensure autonomous operation and uninterrupted provision of digital services.

Azerbaijan is also considering the introduction of a minimum Internet speed threshold in the form of a special regulatory document. All providers will be obliged to prevent the provision of speeds below the established minimum threshold.
