In the period from February 4 to 6, adverse weather conditions, which contribute to the formation of ice and icing, persist on the territory of the country. Due to low temperatures, frost and occasional drizzle on roads and sidewalks slippery coating is formed, which significantly complicates traffic and increases the risk of traffic accidents and injuries among the population.

Prompt measures have been taken

In connection with the situation, all specialized state and municipal services are involved in a round-the-clock mode to ensure the safety of citizens, uninterrupted traffic and prompt response to emergencies.

The National Highway Administration is treating the national highways with anti-icing materials. As of Thursday morning, February 5, 130 units of specialized equipment, 120 employees were involved in the works, more than 1900 tons of anti-icing material were used.

The Inspectorate General for Emergency Situations (IGSU) is carrying out the unblocking and towing of vehicles at the request of citizens. The operations involve 86 special vehicles and 322 employees.

To ensure traffic safety, police and carabinieri are working on highways and in populated areas. A total of 828 police officers and 327 patrol cars, as well as 167 carabinieri and 30 patrol crews are involved. Traffic is difficult in some areas, and the police regularly inform the public about temporary restrictions or suspensions.

Energy distribution network operators are on high alert and ready to respond promptly to emergency power outages.

High injury risk

According to the Ministry of Health, over the past 24 hours, 1,851 requests for medical assistance were registered, of which 386 cases were related to injuries sustained as a result of falls and road traffic incidents.

Capital Mayor Ion Ceban said that municipal services are working continuously in all sectors of the city. The fight against ice began in the evening of the previous day and continued throughout the night. The works were carried out both mechanized and manual on roadways, sidewalks, pedestrian zones, staircases and underpasses.

Due to the constant formation of ice, the treatment of surfaces with de-icing mixtures was carried out repeatedly, as the ice layer recovers within one or two hours due to weather conditions.

In order to reduce risks for children and workers, it was decided that on February 5 and 6, students of the capital will be trained in online format, and civil servants who have the opportunity to work remotely, were switched to remote mode.

Municipal services remain mobilized and citizens are urged to be as careful as possible when traveling. In emergency situations, it is recommended to contact the Central Municipal Dispatch Center or 112.

In other localities, including Balti, municipal services are also working in a reinforced mode. Local authorities urge residents to exercise caution, and roads and sidewalks are treated with de-icing materials depending on the situation.
