The participation of a Moldovan amateur powerlifter in competitions on the territory of Russia was considered by the ministry as “a unilateral unauthorized act contrary to the provisions of the order on the organization and functioning of the national teams of October 13, 2023”. The document, in particular, refers to the athletes’ obligations not to take part in official international sports competitions without the consent of the relevant federation.
Violation of the document provides for disciplinary sanctions against the athlete up to the withdrawal of financial assistance from the state budget in the form of scholarships and bonuses (if the athlete receives them) or even exclusion from the national team. So far, the athlete has received a warning.
The agency also stated that Moldovan athletes should not participate in international competitions organized on the territory of states that promote military aggression. Athletes and federations were reminded of the need to comply with the ethical principles governing the country’s representation in competitions abroad.
