ANSA has banned misleading shoppers

The National Food Safety Agency (ANSA) has warned food industry operators that significant amendments to Law No. 279/2017 on consumer information on food products will enter into force on November 11, 2025.

These amendments particularly relate to Article 16, paragraphs (5-(7, and establish stricter and clearer rules for the labeling of food products containing only flavorings. This is to protect consumers from misleading practices that are detrimental to their legitimate rights and interests.

In the case of food products containing only flavorings, operators are required to indicate on the package or label one of the following inscriptions: “with flavor…”, “with aroma…” or “with flavor and aroma…”, accompanied by the name of the respective flavoring (e.g. “strawberry flavoring”).

These inscriptions must be placed in the field of vision in compliance with all provisions relating to legibility and visibility.

Also, if only flavorings are used in the production of foodstuffs and the fruits, vegetables and/or their vegetable parts are not contained as ingredients, it is strictly forbidden to place images of them in any form on packaging and labels.

ANSA will strictly monitor the actions of food industry operators regarding full compliance of package labeling processes with the new requirements.

There is no transition period. The stockpile of non-compliant labels will expire on November 11, 2025.
