In particular, due to bad weather, there was a mass cancelation of air flights and disruption of railway service. In addition, the number of road accidents increased.
For example, several thousand flights were delayed and canceled at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, as well as in Brussels for several days. Massive cancelations and delays of flights were also recorded in France. There, about one third of the country was placed in the high weather danger mode.
The cyclone is approaching the borders of Moldova.
According to Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko, “the cyclone will enter Ukraine through Chernivtsi and Ivano-Frankivsk regions around four in the morning on January 8. According to forecasts, the temperature drop will reach -20°C at night and up to -10°C during the day. Additional power outages outside of the schedule are possible due to snow sticking to power lines and complicating traffic on the roads.”
Serhiy Nagornyak, a Ukrainian MP and member of the parliamentary energy committee, believes that next week may become the most difficult for the Ukrainian energy sector.
“Until the end of this week the weather is more or less predictable, but next week, I think, will be one of the most difficult in the Ukrainian energy sector, because consumption will grow,” – said the politician on air of TV channel Kyiv 24.
It should be added that the energy systems of Ukraine and Moldova are united into a single “island”, which can be fed from outside (from the EU) only with limited capacity. Therefore, particularly serious energy problems in the neighboring country may affect Moldova as well.
In Moldova itself, starting today, a sharp drop in temperature to -13 °C at night in the center of the country is predicted.
Premier Energy Distribution issued a warning about the difficult meteorological conditions at the beginning of the week.
The Moldovan authorities have not yet commented on the incoming bad weather and related energy threats.
