The relevant amendments to the Law on Cinematography were adopted by the Parliament in the second reading.

The Fund will be financed by annual allocations from the state budget, donor funds, and other sources.

The Fund, in turn, will finance the production of films of all genres and other audiovisual works. As well as the development of cinematographic projects; international co-productions; film distribution; promotion of cinematography at the national and international levels, etc. The regulations on the management and distribution of the Fund’s resources will be approved by the Government and will be managed by the National Center for Cinematography.

The document also stipulates that the financing of projects from the National Cinematography Fund will not exceed 50% of the total cost. The exception will be audiovisual works that have the status of complex films, in which case state support may cover up to 80% of the cost. The draft also provides for increased financial support for experimental and auteur films or productions of high complexity in order to diversify the cultural offer and stimulate artistic innovation.

According to the document, educational programs in film production will be funded. The Odeon cinema will be reorganized and transformed into a public center for film exhibition and film education and incorporated into the structure of the National Center of Cinematography, whose activities will be financed from the state budget.

This year, 20.1 million lei out of 635.3 million lei from the general budget of the culture and education sector was allocated to support cinematography.
