A false start

The Moldovan national soccer team lost two starting matches of the qualifying tournament for the World Cup-2026 (Group I). Serghei Kleshchenko's charges lost to the national teams of Norway and Estonia.

A false start

In the first match “tricolor” faced the national team of Norway. The match ended in defeat for our players with the score 0:5. The goals were scored by Julian Ruerson, Erling Holand, Telo Osgor, Alexander Sørloth and Aron Dönnum.

In the next match our national team hosted the guests from Estonia. Although the Moldovan players managed to impose a struggle, the scoreboard showed a defeat with the score 2:3. Already in the 5th minute the hosts were left in the minority after the suspension of Maxim Cojocaru, after which Rasmus Peetson and Rauno Sappinen brought the score to 0:2.

After the break, Ion Nicolaescu managed to reduce the score, but three minutes later Moldovan goalkeeper Andrei Cojuhari had to take the ball out of the net after Mattias Chait’s goal. In compensated time, Mihail Caimacov scored from a free kick.

Both matches took place at the Zimbru stadium in Chisinau. The next meetings will be held in the summer: On June 6, our players will have to play a friendly match with the Polish national team, and on June 9 – an away match with opponents from Italy.

After two rounds, the national team of Moldova occupies the last, 5th place in Group I. It is headed by the national team of Norway with 6 points, the national teams of Estonia and Israel have 3 points each, but Israel is inferior by additional indicators. The Italian national team, which participated in the matches of the 1/4 finals of the Nations League against Germany (1:2, 3:3), will enter the competition in June 2025.

The teams ranked 1st in their groups will directly qualify for the final tournament of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The second-placed teams will compete for access to the Mundial in knockout matches.

The World Cup will be held in June-July 2026 in the United States, Mexico and Canada. For the first time, 48 national teams will take part in it.
