A difficult start to the melon season

Wholesale purchase prices for Moldovan (non-greenhouse) melons are relatively low: watermelon – about 8-10 lei/kg, melon – about 15-18 lei/kg.

Judging by the data of price monitoring of east-fruit.com, watermelon prices in Moldova at the end of June were at the minimum point for this month in the last three years. Moreover, both in lei and dollar terms.

The price for greenhouse melon, which appeared two weeks earlier, was usual for June 25-30 lei/kg. At the beginning of July, the price for “melon from the field” has significantly decreased, but it is still at the same level as in the first week of July last year.

As agricultural producers note, the beginning of this season was very hard for them. In the sense that some farms had to reseed melon plantations due to spring frosts, and even more than once. As a result, it is still difficult to predict which area of watermelon and melon crops is ready for harvesting. According to a very rough estimate of agrarians – about 10-15% less than last year (about 3.4 thousand hectares).
