There will be no pedestrian zone on Veronika Mikle St.

The discussion on the project, which took place at City Hall, was attended by municipal councillors, experts from urban planning, architecture, urban mobility, academia and civil society.

The presentation included the history of Veronika Mikle Street, analysis of the existing situation, solutions proposed in the technical design, details of the functional order, as well as graphic visualizations of the future layout.

A few years ago, there were debates in Chisinau about turning this street into another pedestrian zone. However, the idea did not find support. Therefore, the future reconstruction will be carried out in such a way as to ensure safe movement of both vehicles and pedestrians. In addition, sidewalks, urban furniture, a lighting system, recreation areas and public spaces will be developed.

Today’s St. Veronika Mikle historically appeared as one of the alleys in the city center in the 1830s. It was then called Fountain Lane. It got its name from a large artesian well located at the intersection with the present Vasile Alexandri Street. A water tower was built on this place according to the project of Alexander Bernardazzi, an exact copy of the tower preserved on A. Matejevicha Street near the State University. But the tower in Fountain Lane was not preserved; it was demolished in the 1960s.

CityWalk 2.0 is an initiative funded by the European Union under the Transnational Program for the Danube Region 2021-2027, aimed at increasing urban mobility through the application of scientific tools developed in the framework of an international partnership.
