The year 2026: local hopes and global anxieties

Every New Year we meet with enthusiasm and hope for changes for the better. This is the way human beings are: no matter how bad things are, no matter what problems overwhelm us, we traditionally consider the New Year as a starting point, from which we will start a completely different life - from a white sheet, without the problematic plume of the past.

The year 2026: local hopes and global anxieties

The year 2025 was not an easy one for Moldova from all points of view. The parliamentary elections held at the end of September once again demonstrated a deep division in society and polarization of political views. Economic trends show stagnation rather than growth. The standard of living of citizens is falling and poverty is increasing. This becomes one of the reasons for increased migration and aggravation of the demographic situation in the country.

But there is another view of the outgoing year – an optimistic one, which sees “the glass half full”. The parliamentary elections showed the consolidation of the healthy forces of society and confirmed the European choice of the majority of citizens. The economy has overcome stagnation and shows signs of revitalization, promising growth in the coming year. Salaries and incomes of citizens are growing, the authorities are doing their best, the diaspora is looking forward to the reforms and is going to return home.

Let us not disappoint and dissuade anyone. Life is what it is – with all the problems, challenges, constant turbulence and uncertainty. There have been better times, but there have also been worse.

It’s not just us – it’s happening all over the world. British magazine The Economist has presented its special annual issue The World Ahead for 2026 with a rebus cover that encrypts predictions for the next year. All the world’s analysts are busy deciphering this rebus. And many see in the encrypted pictures a number of disturbing symbols, dark hints, not the most favorable predictions. These include possible new military conflicts, and the penetration of artificial intelligence into all spheres with unpredictable consequences for humanity, and climatic challenges….

It is not a fact that these predictions will come true. “The new year 2026 will be a year of uncertainty,” commented the new issue of The World Ahead by its editor Tom Standage.

Has it ever been otherwise? Don’t we greet each New Year in a state of uncertainty, with mixed feelings of anxiety and hope? After all, no one can predict with any certainty what lies ahead.

So let us be grateful to fate for what we have. And for the hope that no one has the right to take away – the hope for the best in the New Year!
