The long road to social justice

Dorian Istratius

The deputy of the Action and Solidarity party Dorian Istratii, vice-chairman of the commission for economy, budget and finance, said: “Any crisis – whether it is a pandemic or caused by the war in Ukraine – affects the way of life of citizens. That is why the state has initiated new measures of social support for the most vulnerable categories of the population – to mitigate these shocks and reduce inequality. We are talking about compensation for heating, lump-sum payments to pensioners, support for families with children and other measures”.

Already in the first year of the last parliament, changes were made to the law on pension indexation, aimed at reducing the gap between high and excessively low pensions. In particular, indexation of only the part of the pension that is equal to or lower than the average earnings in the economy was introduced. This reform made it possible to significantly increase the minimum pension with full insurance service – from LE 1,188 in 2021 to LE 3,055 in 2025, an increase of 160%.

“In the medium term, there is room to narrow the gap. We are planning to increase the income of the population in the next four years, we want to double the earnings of citizens. Already now, starting from 2026, it is proposed to increase the minimum wage to 6,300 lei (+15%). In 2026, the average wage in the economy will also increase – from the forecasted 16,100 to 17,400 lei,” the MP said for Logos Press.

He also spoke about the results in the employment of the unemployed. In 2024, 16,699 people who were looking for work were employed (almost 50% more than in 2023). “As far as I know, in 2025 the results are even more impressive – we are waiting for the annual report,” the deputy remarked.

Indicators of the real sector of the economy are also closely monitored to assess the situation in the labor market. In 2025, the average monthly salary amounted to 15,487.8 lei, 9.7% higher than in the third quarter of 2024.

“At the same time, investments in human capital and, of course, more precisely targeted social support are needed. Social assistance should go to those who really need it, and those who can work should work. We have a huge amount of work ahead of us. I hope the war will end and we can move to a much more predictable economy,” Dorian Istratii said.
