“Side effect” of the European market

The sharp jump in chicken egg prices in Moldova is due to the fact that most EU countries have registered large-scale outbreaks of avian flu, which led to a reduction in production and an increase in egg prices.

“Side effect” of the European market

At the same time, the Republic of Moldova is among the few countries in the world (six in total) that have obtained the right to export consumer eggs to the EU market. High demand from European countries has led to the export of a significant volume of Moldovan eggs, which negatively affects the availability of this product on the domestic market.

This is how ANSA director Radu Mustiata explained the situation.

As a result, eggs have been rising in price for the fourth month already and have added more than 8%. Of course, this is upsetting for consumers. However, this situation is clearly temporary.

Moldova was authorized to export eggs to the EU in 2023. The first batch was sent to the EU in October 2024. After that, the number of eggs exported to the European market increased avalanche-like – from 9 thousand eggs in 2024 to more than 10.7 million by July 1, 2025.

However, it is worth noting that at the same time exports to markets outside the EU have also increased. If in 2022 about 6.4 million eggs were shipped, in the first half of 2025 this figure almost doubled to more than 12.2 million.

This stimulates the growth of Moldova’s own egg production, which has enabled a significant reduction in imports. Over the past four years, the volume of egg imports has decreased more than 20 times: from 18.3 million eggs in 2022 to only 868 thousand in the first half of 2025.

In other words, it is very beneficial for the Moldovan economy in the long term that stable exports of such an everyday product are established and our poultry farmers gain a foothold in European trade networks.

And the number of poultry farms authorized to export to Europe is constantly growing.

One of the first such enterprises was JV PB-NORD SRL.

According to the administrator and co-founder of the enterprise Gheorghe Byrledian, the poultry farm with the trademark George Standard entered the Romanian market through the Auchan chain.

“In 2024, our company received official authorization to export products to the EU market. This was a key moment that gave us access to large and promising markets in the region,” said Gheorghe Byrledian. – Immediately after receiving the permit, we started exporting, but we did it through third-party distributors. This experience showed us two things: that our product is in demand and that we are able to consistently provide European quality and logistics.

In parallel, we drew on our many years of experience in packaging, distribution and logistics in Moldova. We realized that we could successfully replicate this model in Romania as well – but directly, without intermediaries, which would allow us to better control the quality, speed of delivery and pricing policy.

That is why we opened our own company in Romania, found a warehouse, hired staff, went through all the veterinary procedures and received documents that officially authorized our activity. After that, we started direct communication with Romanian retail chains to build long-term partnerships”.

For a permanent cooperation, the Moldovan company looked for quality and highly quoted retail chains in Romania. One of them for PB-NORD was Auchan – a brand with a high reputation, strict standards and serious approach to working with suppliers.

“We started negotiations with Auchan and the process took quite a long time. The procurement team was extremely attentive: detailed questions were asked, all documents, processes, product quality, logistics and stability of supply were thoroughly checked,” recalls Byrledyan. – We successfully passed all stages of inspections, confirmed compliance with all requirements and received the green light.

Gheorghe Byrlădian considers the advantage of eggs from Moldova, which helps to win over consumers, to be the fact that they use an absolutely natural and enriched feed base. Natural ingredients such as clover, chamomile and calendula flowers are added to the bird’s diet. Plus a high corn content. And no synthetic additives or pigments, which makes George Standard products different from other brands on the Romanian market.

The joint Moldovan-Dutch enterprise PB-NORD was founded in 2005 by the Dutch company Vencomatic B.V. (with a purely nominal share of 0.15%) and the Birladyan family, which owns 98.45% of the authorized capital, on the territory of one of the largest poultry farms in the MSSR. Poultry farm S.P. PB-NORD SRL is located on an area of 10.27 hectares in the commune of Blesteni, district Edinet. In 2024, PB-NORD’s sales amounted to 99.34 million lei and its profit reached 6.54 million lei. The company had 136 employees.

Taking into account the current events, the enterprise expects a serious growth of all indicators by the end of 2025.
