Moldovan retail: the top 10 chains accounted for 1.55 billion euros

By the beginning of 2025, Moldovan merchants have increased their retail networks to 940 stores operating under 32 brands - both local and international chains. This was announced by Maria Tita Hurduk, General Director of Modern Buyer, during the industry forum "Retail, Distribution & FMCG Market".

At the same time, the greatest concentration is observed in Chisinau: 521 markets of almost all major retailers are located in the capital.

The most invested in the growth of Linella chains – 122 stores nationwide, Local – 90 stores, Rogob – 65, Family Market – 41, Super Linella – 36, “Fidesco” – 31, “Cip Market” – 29, “Merci Gastronome” – 25, “Express Linella” – 22, “Supermarket N1” – 18, “Fourchette” -10, “Kaufland” – 9, “Bonus” – 8, “Pegas” and “Ocean Fish” – 7 outlets each.

The ten chains own 50% of the total number of stores in Moldova. Local” was the fastest to increase its volumes, having expanded its assets up to 90 stores in 2025.

“The total turnover of the top 10 chains in 2024 amounted to 1.55 billion euros, which is 23.4% more than in 2023,” said Maria Hurduk. – The biggest sales were recorded by Dragan Group, which owns Linella group – 11.6 billion lei. The second place is held by the company Imensitate (the chain Local) with a turnover of 4.8 billion lei. The third place was taken by Supermarket N 1 with 3.9 billion lei. Among the transnational operators, Metro Cash $ Carry had the biggest sales – 3.2 billion lei.

According to Bogdana Gheorghe, the director of the analytical company “RetailZoom”, the consumer basket also shows a positive growth: it increased by 8% in quantitative terms and by 19% in value terms. At the same time, the general perception of the consumer is that Moldova has one of the most expensive consumer baskets in Europe.

Overall, in 2024, the volume of sales in chain trade has grown, taking 38% of the total turnover. At the same time, stores at gas stations have a more dynamic trend (plus 8.3% in January 2025). In these outlets, only one category of goods generates the most revenue – tobacco products (51.4%).

As for the so-called traditional stores, they show the most frequent price growth dynamics, while maintaining their share in the Moldovan retail market.
