Another election of hopefuls

Every next election in Moldova raises the degree of tension among the participants of the electoral process, politicians, experts and even external partners. To listen to them, one can believe that the struggle is not for warm seats in the parliament, but for the redistribution of the world, at least. And if one or the other is not elected, the world will turn upside down, life will end, the future will fade.... In short, there will be a complete apocalypse.

Another election of hopefuls

And a completely opposite trend is observed among ordinary citizens – frustration and hopelessness reign at the “bottom”. The further it goes, the more so. People practically do not believe that anything really depends on their choice, that their vote is important and meaningful. And even if those they voted for come to power, it is far from certain that it will not become another disappointment. We have been through this many times before.

Despite this, people traditionally still pin certain hopes on each regular election. This is how we are organized: this time everything will change, it can’t help but change.

With these thoughts many people will go to the ballot boxes on Sunday. And on Monday there will be winners and disappointed.

That’s normal. What is not normal is that the winners consider the latter “not theirs”. That the disappointed consider the former “unworthy.” That in general many people consider the elections manipulative, falsified and not reflecting the real mood of citizens.

Polarization in Moldovan society has reached its peak. Its manifestations, unfortunately, more and more often pass the forms of civilized communication and human morality. And this is the main negative asset of our society, the main problem of Moldovan reality right now. Elections are not the cause of polarization, but its consequence.

We all want a better life for ourselves and for the country. Everyone sees this way in his own way. Everyone believes that those for whom they voted are the best suited to ensure this better future.

Whoever wins on September 28, a divided and divided Moldovan society will be their main headache. It will hinder the development of the economy, the implementation of necessary reforms, and the resolution of social problems. It will eventually become a serious brake on the road to Europe, which many see as the main goal of Sunday’s elections.

That is why the hopes of most people in these elections are probably linked precisely to the fact that forces will come to power in the country that will be able to overcome this split. Or at least start that process. Who will not divide people into “their own” and “strangers”. On “good” and “bad”. Pro-Kremlin and pro-European.

They won’t divide at all. They will perceive us all – both those living in the country and those belonging to the diaspora (European, American, Russian, Turkish, etc.) – as a single entity. As equal citizens of one country. As it should be.

If this happens, the rest of our hopes will start to come true. And for starters, everyone should go out and vote on Sunday.
