A bilateral exploratory meeting on Chapter 15 “Energy” and Chapter 21 “Trans-European Energy Networks” was held in Brussels at the end of last week.

“For Chapters 15 and 21, the Energy Ministry team prepared 14 presentations covering topics such as insurance reserves, electricity, grid codes, nuclear power and governance,” the ministry said in a press release.

The discussions highlighted Moldova’s progress in transposing and implementing the European legislation in the energy sector. And Chapter 15 (Energy) was mentioned as one of the most advanced at the moment.

“We have made significant progress in strengthening energy security. And we are confident that we will guarantee the commissioning of the Vulcanesti – Chisinau transmission line by the end of 2025. As for the second interconnection line with Romania, Balti – Suceava, the necessary sources of financing have already been identified, and the specifications and the selection by tender of the company that will implement this project, which is strategically important for Moldova, are being worked on,” the State Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Constantin Borosan, emphasized during the meeting.

The priorities for the development of the national energy sector include:

– Diversification of natural gas and electricity supply sources and routes;

– liberalization of energy markets, including unbundling, open access to networks and regional integration;

– improving energy efficiency, promoting renewable energy sources, and improving the performance of public institutions in the energy sector.

The Republic of Moldova was also commended for its achievements in implementing EU energy legislation, as evidenced by an overall score of 66% – the highest score among all Contracting Parties in the Energy Community Implementation Report 2024.
