The 2025 cherry season is a season of records

The 2025 season was marked by other records. The most notable of them is the highest prices for cherries in the modern history of Moldova. According to east-fruit.com monitoring, the average wholesale price for cherries in Moldova was about 45 lei/kg, which is about 30-35% higher than in last year’s sales season. The working wholesale price of these fruits in 2021 and 2022 was 65-70% lower than in 2025. However, the unprecedented high prices this year did not provide growers with a profit from cherry sales.

“Due to prolonged spring frosts, the enterprise I co-founded harvested about three times less cherries than last year,” Vitalie Gorinchoi, chairman of the Moldova Fruct Association, comments on the results of the season. – At the same time, the prices for selling the harvest, even on the highly profitable EU market, were higher by about one third, but not three times. It is also necessary to take into account that labor costs have increased unprecedentedly this year. The harvest is low, which means that day laborers were not interested in harvesting for a short period of time for low pay. Therefore, the owners of intensive cherry orchards with highly liquid export varieties were forced to raise the payment for each harvested kilogram of cherries up to 10 lei. At the beginning of the current five-year period, only some growers paid 3-4 lei/kg for cherry picking”.

Earlier Logos Press reported that in June 2025 Moldova sent to foreign markets about 8 thousand tons of cherries. This is about 20% less than in June 2024. Last year’s cherry sales season was considered poor due to rainfall during the harvesting period. The rains resulted in cracking (cracking) of berries and reduced quality, value and compliance with “fresh market” demands. The presumably low final physical exports of cherries for the 2025 crop are an anti-record, even against the backdrop of poor seasons.
