Port of Giurgiulesti
According to Iurie Rija, an expert in agro-marketing, in the structure of port transshipment of cargoes, 54% are export and 46% are import flows. The share of Ungheni port in exports is 77%, in imports – 70%, and that of Giurgiulesti port – 23% and 30% respectively.
“This distribution underlines the critical role of Ungheni port as a key logistics center of the country,” says the quoted source. – As for the port of Giurgiulesti, despite its more modest share in the flow of goods, it still plays an important role in diversifying trade routes and providing merchants with access to river routes.”
The port of Ungheni is the main export channel for sunflower, wheat, corn, as well as scrap metal and vegetable oil. At the same time, the port of Giurgiulesti, in addition to cereals, exports rapeseed, live animals and barley. This differentiation in the export structure between ports may indicate the specialization of each port, depending on the available logistic routes and the types of cargoes served.
The port of Ungheni is also a major recipient of diesel, fertilizers, coal, gasoline and other commodities, while the port of Giurgiulesti plays a key role in imports of gravel, salt, soda and other specific cargoes. It is important to take into account that gravel imports are distributed almost equally between the two ports of Moldova.
